This class will focus on learning your camera’s functions so that you can move beyond your presets and take better pictures. Topics to be discussed will include how the digital sensor works; file format, e.g. JPEG vs. RAW vs. TIFF; exposure and metering; basic photographic technique; and a few post-processing techniques for easy emailing and web-posting of your photos.

Cost $100.00 - Class Limit 10
Teacher: Erik Gehring
This class will discuss more detailed photographic techniques so that you can tell better stories through your images. Topics will include basic compositional tenets like the Rule of Thirds; color and light; exposure and depth of field; and how your equipment affects your image (e.g. telephoto vs. wide angle). One session will be a field trip to the nearby Arnold Arboretum, to be scheduled once class begins, and students will be encouraged to bring in their own work for critique.
Erik Gehring currently lives in Roslindale and has been a freelance writer and photographer since 2002. His writing and photography have appeared in print in the Boston Globe, the Cape Cod Times, Natural New England, E the Environmental Magazine, AMC's Outdoors, and numerous other publications. He has shown images from his travels through natural New England at galleries and art festivals throughout New Hampshire and eastern Massachusetts. You can take a 10% discount with a Roslindale Community Center or a Roslindale Arts Alliance Membership
Minimum of 5 students must be pre-registered for class to take place
In some classes there will be a materials fee payable to teacher the first night of class. Some classes list materials you will bring
Cancellations with refund only with a week’s notice.
If a class is cancelled due to inclement weather or the closure of the Community Center, the class will be rescheduled. Students will be notified by phone.
