Learn the basics of beautiful writing: pen-handling, layout and letterforms. Bookhand, chancery cursive (italic), and black letter (gothic) scripts will be introduced. A brief overview of the history of writing will accompany the hands-on practice. Mary Newell DePalma studied calligraphy with Arnold Bank at Carnegie Mellon University and worked as an apprentice engrosser at BC Kassell Co in Chicago IL. She has designed calligraphic greeting cards, posters, invitations, books, and diplomas during her career as a freelance illustrator.

Mary Newell DePalma is the author and illustrator of three children’s picture books: "The Strange Egg," a whimsical tale of wonder, curiosity, and friendship; A Grand Old Tree, a simple and beautiful tale about life itself; and The Nutcracker Doll, about a child’s role in the Boston Ballet Nutcracker. She has also illustrated more than a dozen books for other authors. For the past twenty years, Mary has worked as a freelance medical, editorial, educational, advertising, children's book, and semi-technical illustrator. Web Site

RAA Class Policies

You can take a 10% discount with a Roslindale Community Center or a Roslindale Arts Alliance Membership

Minimum of 5 students must be pre-registered for class to take place

In some classes there will be a materials fee payable to teacher the first night of class. Some classes list materials you will bring

Cancellations with refund only with a week’s notice.

If a class is cancelled due to inclement weather or the closureof the Community Center, the class will be rescheduled. Students will be notified by phone.
