According to Joyce, "All my life I’ve approached my art as an organic process. I usually start with a simple idea and see where it takes me. Each decision influences the next, and one concept will branch off in directions I never would have anticipated. My most fundamental source of inspiration is nature, and I like to think of my art—whether I’m working with painting, photography, or decoupage—as a living thing that I need to cultivate, tend and allow to flourish."

"I use the name BranchDesign because it reflects the way my artistic ideas branch off from a stable center. I also draw a great deal of inspiration from language, and sometimes incorporate elements of poetry, lyrics and other words in my art, particularly in decoupage. Pauline R. Kezer said, 'Continuity gives us roots; change gives us branches, letting us stretch and grow and reach new heights.' This statement has particular importance to me, and helps me to remember where some of my ideas originate from, and what I have seen them grow into."

"I think of my art as coming from an emotional state of thoughtfulness and kindness, but I allow it to go where it needs to. I’ve never been afraid to explore feelings of darkness, anger, or sorrow. I think of my art as being as complex as a living thing, exploring contrasting and complimentary textures, colors, and forms, experimenting with layering different emotions that make up a multifaceted whole."
